Being a second semester senior, I know a thing or two about how to survive midterms… hell, it may not always be a graceful experience but so far I’ve made it through to the other side.
Here’s how I’ve done it:
One: I’m a huuuge procrastinator. One thing that helps me? Dividing the work. This means if you have 10 chapters you have to review for the midterm, focus on two chapters every day for five days… breaks everything down and makes it easier to remember.
Two: If you “forgot” to study until the day before, well, that’s not ideal but the best way to deal with a situation like that is to focus on your class notes. Did the professor emphasize something (meaning, spent a lot of time talking about that one specific thing)? Did he or she put important terms on a powerpoint? If you’re lucky, you’ll have a prof who will even tell you which terms are important for tests. In that case, put a star next to those terms, highlight them, say them out loud. Whatever you gotta do to remember them.
Three: Use Quizlet. Seriously, it may just save your GPA. The site allows you to create your own flashcards… instead of killing trees and writing them out yourself and possibly getting carpal tunnel. You can use the flashcards to take hypothetical tests and play games. Plus, there’s an app for that.
Four: Sustenance. Eat up, y’all. Your brain can’t focus if you’re not getting enough protein and nutrients. Also, drink plenty of water. Not only will it make you look good, it’ll make you feel hydrated and ready to conquer the exam.
I’m recommending the new Berry Pomegranate Chia Clif Bars. They’re bomb.
Five: Take much needed study breaks. There’s a point while studying when my brain decides it can’t handle any more information and I start feeling unable to focus. To regain focus, give your brain a deserved break. Watch a show on Netflix, go workout, spend time on social media… whatever you gotta do to get back on your A-game.
